Grease components

Grease is manufactured by combining three essential components: base oil, thickener and additives.

Base Oil

The largest component of grease. Base oil may be mineral oil, synthetic oil or any fluid with lubricating properties.

Thickener

Any material, which - used in combination with the base oil - produces the solid to semi-fluid consistency. Different applications and conditions require different thickeners. The thickeners Valvoline uses in its grease range are shown below.

Additives

The most common additives used are oxidation or rust inhibitors, polymers, extreme pressure (EP) additives, anti-wear agents, lubricity agents or friction-reducing agents and dyes or pigments.
